OpenAI launches advanced AI solution for US government projects

OpenAI just launched an AI product designed particularly for the US government.

The new offering it’s calling “ChatGPT Gov” will enable government agencies to share “non-public, sensitive information” with artificial intelligence without having to compromise on privacy and security.

More than 90,000 employees of local, state, and federal government have used ChatGPT since the start of 2024 to generate well over 18 million prompts, according to OpenAI.

What we know so far about ChatGPT Gov

ChatGPT Gov is similar to the enterprise version of the AI offering in terms of the user interface.

But will run on the government agencies’ own cloud, making it easier to “manage security, privacy, and compliance requirements,” as per the company’s head of federal sales Felipe Millon.

The use of artificial intelligence has so far faced intense scrutiny due to data privacy concerns and other potentially harmful effects.

However, an OpenAI representative said the company focused on special considerations that apply to government use of artificial intelligence in developing ChatGPT Gov.

The announcement arrives only days after President Donald Trump announced a $500 billion AI initiative backed by OpenAI and Oracle.

Note that shares of the San Francisco headquartered artificial intelligence company are not yet available for the public to trade.

What DeepSeek’s AI model means for OpenAI

OpenAI has been in focus this week after a Chinese rival DeepSeek launched a new AI model it claimed was more powerful than ChatGPT but costed only a fraction to build.

The US firm has already acknowledged DeepSeek’s achievement, calling its model impressive.

However, it also “underscores how important it is that the US wins this race,” according to OpenAI’s chief product officer Kevin Weil.

Weil also told reporters in a briefing today that OpenAI remains fully committed to “moving really quickly” in order to “stay ahead” and maintain its competitive edge.

Note that Statista forecasts the artificial intelligence market to grow at a compound annualised rate of more than 27% through the end of this decade.

President Trump wants US to lead the AI revolution

OpenAI’s commitment to staying ahead is in line with the broader vision of President Trump who dubbed DeepSeek’s new AI model a “wake-up call” for the American tech companies.

He urged the domestic AI firms to focus on innovation to retain their competitive edge on Tuesday.

The recent developments unfold amidst the new government’s commitment to making America a leader in emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence and cryptocurrencies.

Continues momentum in AI spending pushed OpenAI valuation to $157 billion in its most recent funding round – close to double the $80 billion it secured in its previous round earlier in the same year (2024).
